Nintendo released the first glimpse of their new console the Nintendo Switch. It was known as the Nintendo NX in development but now the concept is known Switch seems to be the most relevant.
The first mention of a new console from the Japanese gaming giants was in March 2015 and it will be March 2017 when the console is released. It is not just another piece of hardware for Nintendo but many critics view this as a last chance to show they still can operate in the console market after losing so many gamers after the travesty of the Wii U. The Nintendo Switch will be make or break.
The video release of the console happened on the 20th October 2016 and gave fans the first glimpse of the what they can expect. Fans were tuned into YouTube and Nintendo’s website and excitement was palpable. The video showed the console was a tablet type with a dock connected to a TV. The tablet and dock seems to serve as the console itself before being totally independently detachable. It can be removed from its station to automatically change to handheld gaming.
The controllers seem to be the cornerstone of the project. They can ‘Switch’ from being used in a controller to being attached to the tablet. The two small sides of controllers are also able to be used independently for simple co-op play. Players are shown to be enjoying Mario Kart and Basketball in various other consoles cannot.
It appears they finally have publishers on side to with big guns Activision Blizzard, EA and Take Two already on board to make games for the console.
This for many will be the last chance for Nintendo after they dropped the ball so massively with Wii U. It only sold 13m units compared with PS4 which has sold 40m. Publishers stayed away in their droves meaning only a small selection of games were available for owners.
The unveiling of the Nintendo Switch has been well received so far at least. Shares in Nintendo rose 3.34% with it already getting across what it is about to potential buyers. The Wii U was a marketing disaster as many though it was simply an add on for the Wii.
The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo’s big chance at redemption and if they can offer big games from the world’s most popular developers as well as their own Nintendo classics then they might just save their business. Otherwise this might be the last time anyone plays a Mario game on Nintendo hardware.
